Make more of arts and crafts lessons

All too frequently, a craft lesson is an end in itself. So much more can be done with arts and crafts to make them a vital lesson over and above the product. You can use crafts to teach students to make mnemonic devises such as Native American story beads or to give them insight into folk culture creations such as fences, homemade tools, baskets, lawn decorations, plates and toys.

Crafts can be used for all ages and are not limited to holidays. They can even be used as part of a multiple intelligence project I highly recommend. In it, students research how each material used is made, from paste to crayons, as well as the object being made. So, we've brought together a wide variety of resources.

Of course, you can always start right here at Reach Every Child.

Corking
Spool knitting is a great team project. Each student knits part of a banner for the room. It takes time, but is a great way to teach fine motor coordination and design, as well as patience and respect for those that made clothes and even rugs in a similar manner. It also helps kinetic learners.

Indian Beads
You can substitute any common element for these beads, such as construction paper with a hole in it, buttons or paper clips. Each item reminds students of part of a story, and it can become a lesson on how to make beaded bracelets. It can also naturally result in an interest in knitting and making a loom.
