Perhaps it is just the new math, but differentiated instruction is grounded in the fact different students learn differently and in research by Howard Gardner on types of intelligences. On the surface it looks like a good idea, but in reality it takes more resources and time. And no research exists showing it results in higher test scores -- the holy grail of No Child Left Behind.
Nevertheless, differentiated instruction challenges many teachers and holds promise to provide better learning opportunities for students by encouraging educators to use variety in their planning. As such, we’re providing some good sites with resources and ideas so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
One of the key concepts is the use of integrated learning when teaching. Bringing together art, English, social studies, music, science and even physical education offers some interesting ways to provide differentiated opportunities. These sites help in that regard: How to Integrate Lessons
Since students bring various levels of knowledge based on their past experiences and education, many options help mold the curriculum to the child.
