Commemorate the United Nations' founding

In the spring of 1945, representatives of 50 nations met in San Francisco, to draft the Charter of the United Nations. On Oct. 24, that charter went into effect.

Since then, the United Nations has worked to fulfill its primary purpose - maintaining world peace. The organization also provides a place for nations to promote their views and work through conflicts nonviolently. The United Nations allows countries to cooperate to solve problems like poverty, disease and pollution. And it stands as a symbol of international unity.

Today more than ever, we are a world community. Help your students understand how they are tied to the rest of the world with the following resources. Choose from:
