Postcard exchanges are a great learning tool for students and can easily be integrated into the curriculum. For example, have students calculate postage for latitudinal and longitudinal cards, governors of state, state birds and more. I also recommend a follow-up activity writing to the governor of each state and requesting a letter to bring civics into the mix.
With advancing technology, such projects may soon become obsolete. Consider having students create their own school and community postcards and exchange them with other schools.
