Help for substitute teachers

Being a substitute teacher (supply teacher in Canada) lets teacher candidates learn if they really want to teach, the grade level they prefer, the type of administrator they want to work for and local school districts and their requirements. Substitute teaching also exposes them to what other teachers are doing, so they can modify the best ideas for their own use. In other words, substitute teaching is a truly worthwhile activity for prospective teachers.

For retired and experienced teachers, substitute teaching is a way to keep "fit" and involved with youth. For those credentialed teachers who have recently moved or have not found full-time employment, substitute teaching is a mixed blessing. A good substitute teacher may have but one problem in the classroom -- being overlooked for a full-time job for a teacher new to the district. So beware.

All substitute teachers are expected to follow the lesson plan. However, there are times when plans are missing, too vague, or the class is too unruly. In that case, good ideas to create order and keep students interested are listed here.
