women's contributionsUntil recently, women's contributions in most
fields went unrecognized and unstudied. But in March 1980, President Jimmy Carter
asked Americans to celebrate women's historic accomplishments the week of March
8, in conjunction with International Women's Day and local Women's History Week
celebrations. By the end of that year, the first Joint Congressional Resolution
declared the week of March 8, 1981, as National Women's History Week. In addition,
the National Women's History Project (NWHP) was founded in Santa Rosa, Calif.,
to provide a national clearinghouse for information on women's history. In
1987, at the request of organizations the NWHP had been working with, it petitioned
Congress to expand national celebrations to the entire month of March. The National
Women's History Month Resolution was approved quickly, and it is now a major national
and international celebration. The following resources will help you learn
