| Objective: Students will learn the
relationship between population centers and sports teams.
They will learn the influence of weather on attendance
and become aware of the influence of geography, traffic
flow and disposable income on site selection for sports
stadiums within cities and states. The different teams
also may give rise to cultural differences in various
locations.
Procedures:
- Provide students with the addresses of the professional
football teams listed on this site. (See Sports.)
Have them search the sites for the size of the stadium
and the average crowd size. If unavailable, have students
write an e-mail or letter to each team requesting
this information.
- On a map of the United States, locate the cities
where teams are located. Using the Census Bureau web
site, get the latest population statistics for these
locations.
- Evaluate the relationship between stadium size,
community population and crowd size. Reach a conclusion
as to which team will have the largest draw for the
coming school year. (Selecting football enables the
students to see if their predictions are accurate.
Do not count Green Bay.)
- Develop a chart, and keep track of the audience
figures using the teams' Internet sites or newspapers.
- Keep track of weather in the communities on game
day and see if inclement weather makes a difference
in attendance.
- Finally, have students form teams and judge possible
sites for expansion teams. Send the results to the
league president.
